The booking wizard - delivery, customs, sender, receiver and review
Most shipments are booked automatically when an order is packed. The wizard is for everything else: a manual booking, a re-book after a failure, a parcel with no order behind it, or a return label.
Requires shipments:book.
Getting there
- Create shipment on a fulfilment, for an order that was not auto-booked
- Shipping → Create shipment, for a standalone parcel with no order
- From the shipments list or a fulfilment, Book return - the same wizard, prefilled as a return
The steps
The wizard shows only the steps your shipment needs, and you can jump back to any completed step from the chips at the top.
1. Delivery. Carrier configuration, service, and any additional services that service offers. Some additional services are mandatory, and some come in groups where you must choose exactly one. Also package type, dimensions, weight, insurance and contents.
2. Customs. Only appears when the sender and receiver countries require it, and never for manual or pickup shipments. Needs an Incoterm, and per item an HS code, country of origin and value. If items are missing customs data, fix it on the item rather than typing it in here every time - see Customs.
3. Sender. Defaults to the warehouse address. Override it when you are drop-shipping or returning goods to a supplier. Frequently used addresses can be saved in the address book.
4. Receiver. From the order, or entered by hand. For services that deliver to a pickup point, this is where you search for and pick one.
5. Review. Everything in one place before you commit. Local pickup gets its own handling here.
What booking does
The carrier is asked for a label. On success you get a tracking number, the label, and any documents the route produces - CMR, waybill or proforma invoice. The label is sent to your printer if the Printer Client is connected, and otherwise opens in the browser.
On failure, the carrier's own error is shown on the shipment. That message is usually specific - an address field the carrier rejects, a service not valid for the route, or a missing customs field.
Booking a return
The Book return variant flips the sender and receiver and picks a return service. Use it when a customer needs a label for goods already in their hands. For labels put in the box at ship time, see return labels.
Pricing
Where the carrier can quote, the price is shown before you book. On an MPH standard agreement the price comes from the contract and is charged to your wallet at booking. On your own agreement, price estimates are opt-in and non-binding - the carrier invoices you directly.
